About Us
"...the thing that I've tried to do is make people's dreams come true. I want their trip to be what they dreamed it would be. It's thrilling to have a client get home and say they've just had the most wonderful trip they've ever taken in their life. That's the joy of being in this business."
Eleanor Harmon — Co-Founder
From an article in NTA’s Courier Magazine
In the summer of 1957, Earl and Eleanor Harmon, assisted by seven children, operated the American Oil Service Station and Hammett Grocery in Hammett, Idaho. Hammett Service was a "flag-stop" for Greyhound Bus Lines. At this time "escorted bus tours" were being put together and sold to the public! Earl and Eleanor were asked to put a tour together by a friend, an 8 day tour through Utah, Arizona, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and home for a price of $79.00. The tour was scheduled for February 1958. This put Earl and Eleanor on the way to the travel business.
In 1962, the Harmon gang moved to Boise where the "office" was the kitchen table. Earl began working as station manager for the Trailways Bus Company. Eleanor organized and operated the group tour business. Seven children helped with brochures, stuffing envelopes, mailings, mimeographs, and all! Their main clientele during those first years were senior citizens, most of which had very little travel experience. This was the Harmon's goal; making their dreams come true! And this remains the Harmon Travel goal!
Earl stepped into the national spotlight of the travel industry and played a significant role in the formation of the United States Congressional Travel and Tourism Caucus. He was the president of the National Tour Association in 1979 & 1980, Advisory Board of the National Park Service, Trustee for ASTA's Health and Accident Fund, member of the Steering Committee of the American Express Worldwide Representative Program, and former Director of TIA.
Harmon Travel grew through the years and in 1968 they moved the office off the kitchen table and purchased a building at 1529 W Washington Street. Bob and Dave started working with Earl and Eleanor in 1974 and, in 1997, Bob became President and Dave became Secretary/Treasurer.
The Harmon Travel family has seen the world, and continues to see it. Their humble beginnings have helped make it possible for thousands of others to see it, too! Harmon Travel has grown through the years and today stands as one of the most respected travel agencies in the Treasure Valley.
